Going private was probably the best option for /r/childfree if it didn't want to become the next /r/jailbait in terms of media outrage. They're not exactly known for being kind or reasonable people, and I'm sure they don't want to deal with exponentially larger scrutiny than usual.
I have seen the most reasonable and well mannered people in there. It should be called /r/againstassholeparents

Like every subreddit, it has it's hateful posters obviously. And lots of the people are venting out of frustration they regularly get from people hating on them IRL. Not that I condone childish name calling, but c'mon, as if that also doesn't exist on every other sub?

I have seen very reasonable and well-mannered people in there.
I have also seen complete assholes there.
I have also seen people who probably aren't assholes, but really come across as assholes because they refuse to accept that what sounds like a snarky joke to them sounds like genuine hate to others.
Most importantly, even the reasonable and well-mannered people seem to be opposed to the idea that the sub should tone down some of the stuff that comes across as assholerly in order to be able to be taken seriously by others. When I have pointed out "this is the sort of post and the sort of language that gives readers good reason to dismiss this sub as nothing but asshole child-haters, and it doesn't speak well of us", I have received nothing but downvotes and "HOW DARE YOU TELL ME WHAT TO DO!!?? I'M TOTALLY REASONABLE AND SHOULDN'T HAVE TO CENSOR MYSELF JUST TO SOUND REASONABLE!!"
/r/childree has plenty of reasonable people, but they don't make any effort to seem reasonable and well-mannered, which allows the people who sound like assholes to everyone, particularly children, to dominate the public impression.

No, there's been a lot of anger at people just for having "fuck trophies" or raising their "crotchfruit." Not wanting to have kids doesn't make you sick, but yelling at everyone who has kids (including, I guess, one's own parents) make you shrill and obnoxious.

there is a lot of anger at people who did something anoying or didn't do something and thus were anoying that people actually got mad about and then they sprinkeled the entire thing with insults that you might argue are crass.
