Reddit loves to shit all over fat people (particularly fat women) under the pretense of "health concerns" and the financial toll it takes. Yet you never hear of someone who smokes pot every day getting attacked because he's drastically increasing his risk of lung cancer and becoming a potential burden on the system, oh no.

When 27% of americans will smoke pot everyday and cost an estimated 190 billion dollars for taxpayers, people will gladly shit over them as well.

Obese people die earlier though. What's the cost if you subtract Social Security from that cost? Couldn't find it.

Anyway, tobacco-related health concerns cost 96 billion but I have never, ever heard anyone here complain or whine about smokers or shit on them, though their smoke actually harms others and a person being fat doesn't.

18% smoke.

The health and costs are just a smokescreen for most people to let them hate on fat people.

> Obese people die earlier though.

They also take more time off from work for health-related reasons, and work fewer years (since they're more likely to die before retirement age). They are also less productive than non-obese workers.

If you're giving them credit for dying sooner, you should also take into account that they contribute less, as well.

Not that this justifies people hating fat people or anything, but it is a valid social issue that shouldn't be glossed over based on specious reasoning.

Not sure about the US, but in the UK smokers pay way more tax on cigarettes than they cost on the NHS. There is no tax like that on overweight people.

Really? I think we live in the different worlds then.

There are massive amounts of taxes, regulations, advertisement campaigns and government time spent specifically to stop people from smoking. Also, the 96 billion number is from the five years from 2000 to 2004, so the yearly number is about 19 billion dollars per year - 10% of what obesity costs.

>The health and costs are just a smokescreen for most people to let them hate on fat people.

Stop pretending you are being oppressed.

Yes, by the government.. but what ordinary people hate on it? Have you seen many people on Reddit call smokers disgusting? I haven't.

Anyway this is a bit awkward. I said (incorrectly) 96 billion, you found 19 billion, now I find a report by the CDC saying 289 billion per year, with 133 of that consisting out of medical care for adults. I'm a bit confused here.

I'm not fat. But no, people who disagree with you can only be fat or pretend they're oppressed, right?

Yes, people do complain about the smell, the yellow fingers, the rotten teeth, the leather-looking skin and so on. "Smokers are disgusting" gives you 70.000 hits on google, one and a half million without quotes. That still doesn't make it discrimination against them, just people judging them for their shitty choices. See the analogy?

Even taking that amount, smokers have gone down from 42% of the population in 1965 to 18% in 2012, and are projected to go even lower - it's a battle that the US is winning. The same can't be said for obesity, so it is only normal for people to take a more critical attitude towards the present emergency than towards the one that is being solved.

Whatever they are, when they attempt to make fatness a social justice issue they are cheapening all the actual discriminatory and oppressive power structures in society (that happen to be real, not about I can't find a man because of how I abused my body and XXXXXXL clothes are expensive, these are totally feminist issues). And whatever reason they may have doesn't interest me at all.

Well honestly it seems like more and more of reddit is joining the fatlogic bandwagon. Threads involving any negative mention of fatties tend to attract downvotes.

I don't make fun of anyone for anything that's not their fault. Weight is something that almost everyone has control over. Except for very rare cases, it's someone's own fault if they're fat, so I'll say anything I damn well please.

Be an asshole if you want to, just don't pretend you're doing anyone a favour by being a prick. And don't cry about it when people call you out for behaving like one.

The pro-fat circlejerk is easily one of reddit's more confusing trends.

I don't care one way or another, if I want to be mean to someone there's usually a more clever way to go about it. I just don't understand the people who claim that obesity is healthy. I never see smokers claiming that their hobby is healthy.

It sure is 2003 in here. I haven't seen an anti-pot commercial in over a decade.
