'A country that has to ration their electricity is about to beat the most powerful nation in the world. That sort of shows how awful the US is at this sport' doesn't go down to well in /r/soccer. (np.reddit.com)

This world cup thing is a PIA.

Oh grow up. It's the world's biggest sport. Europeans didn't complain when half the front page was NFL related during the Super Bowl.

/r/worldnews? You mean that place which spouts "DAMNED IF WE DO, DAMNED IF WE DONT" on every situation regarding US intervention and goes extreme lengths to justify American foreign policy at the expense of those evil Moooslems? Yes I have, it's a constant anti-Muslim, anti-Israel, pro-American circlejerk. It's the biggest American persecution complex of them all.

Well the anti-america stuff I'm referencing doesn't happen in SRD, it happens in /r/soccer. What I've seen in this SRD thread is a bunch of butthurt europeans whining about Americans and then getting laughed at because you guys are salty as fuck about all this world cup bullshit.

No, i think the olympics should be canceled outright. It's a titanic waste of money and energy that could be better used for something else.

Summer 2012 cost about 9.3 billion dollars. - if you don't think there's a better way that could be spent then watching people play sports, then you are drunk.

What I don't get is that apparently FIFA is a babyeating satanmonster...but all the people who claim it is continue to line their pockets. I've yet to see an adequate justification from people who both love kickyfooty but hate FIFA for why they continue to contribute to the problem.

I also don't get why sports fans act like they are somehow participating in the action. Its all over reddit this week. "We" won, "My" team. If I walked out of a Captain America saying "Yeah! WE did it! We beat (Villain)!" people would think I'm a nutter.

So, uh... you understand that soccer exists in real life, right?

  • [-]
  • Alchemistmerlin
  • -6 Points
  • 02:21:34, 17 June

So, uh...how does that change the actual example?

The level of interaction between people watching a soccer game on television and someone watching a movie on television is exactly the same. Their impact on the events occurring is identical. You knew that already though and were just being obnoxious, right?

  • [-]
  • winterd

What the fuck? If I threw a train onto a pitch during a game it would kill people, if I threw one threw a movie screen nothing would happen in the movie.

  • [-]
  • Alchemistmerlin
  • 1 Points
  • 05:11:52, 17 June

If you are implying you can throw a train at all, even if you can't somehow throw it through the previously specified television where the match is being watched, then I am sorry.

I do not want to be on the bad side of a guy who can apparently throw trains.

I used an example like that so that you couldn't deny that the event would have some effect. I thought you were saying that watching a game in person and cheering had the same effect as watching a movie on a screen. That must have been in another part of this thread.

The we and my thing is just a thing. People identify with all sorts of things, video games, politicians, subreddits...

FIFA is akin to the NCAA in the US, and fans of NCAA sports are often not a fan of the NCAA.

FIFA is a mess, but I'm not sure it could be any other way. The sheer range of nations, stability, legal issues... resource disparity seems to invite madness.

"I don't know how/ can't see how it could be better." seems a pretty poor excuse for continuing to sponsor what I've been led to believe is an incredibly evil organization.

If it isn't a defense/excuse/justification, then how do you justify the immoral action of supporting an allegedly evil organization?

I'm curious. What immoral action did people perform today that involved FIFA?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlJEt2KU33I&feature=kp

Now keep in mind I don't follow soccer so my information comes second hand, but this is a fairly broad description of the things they do wrong that you are directly supporting by financially supporting the organization as a whole.

You could argue that financial support in exchange for a service is not tacit support of the company's actions as a whole I suppose. I think you'd be wrong, but you COULD argue/believe that.

  • [-]
  • superslab

  • 02:26:28, 17 June

I'm familiar with FIFA's poor behavior. I guess I should've asked if you believe it's immoral to view entertainment? FIFA's certainly making money off the ESPN broadcasts whether I watch them or not.

  • [-]
  • Alchemistmerlin

  • 02:30:01, 17 June

And we get into the argument I find myself having on reddit a lot: How many steps of separation are necessary before your actions are no longer influencing other's actions? How responsible are you for those things?

I don't really know the answer to either sadly. Obviously ESPN wouldn't pay FIFA if no one was watching the broadcasts. So are you supporting ESPN supporting FIFA by watching them? I would say so. A lot of people, like you did, will make the argument "Well but lots of other people are doing it so therefore it is okay if I do it because my 1 view/vote/dollar won't matter anyway."

That seems like an untenable position to me because it tends to be everyone's justification and as such becomes kind of circular.

I had this same problem with the Ender's Game movie because I didn't want to financially support or indirectly support a vehicle that gave money to an open and unapologetic bigot.

> If I walked out of a Captain America saying "Yeah! WE did it! We beat (Villain)!" people would think I'm a nutter.

True, but that is mostly because in a movie it doesn't matter who you root for, because the end is scripted.

  • [-]
  • Alchemistmerlin
  • -11 Points
  • 00:28:06, 17 June

And in sports your rooting has no effect on the outcome whatsoever so the fact that it is live rather than scripted doesn't really matter?

Let's swap Captain America for Any given character from the A Song of Ice and Fire book series then, since the "good guys" in that have a fairly high mortality rate and people (Other than George) don't actually know the outcome in advance.

Fair enough.

But now lets make the characters of ASOIAF be representative of a region each; the Starks are Dakota, the Lannisters are Miami, the whoever else is other states.

People wouldnt think you were so weird if you said "we" won, if the Miami Lannisters killed someone else.

  • [-]
  • Alchemistmerlin

  • 02:15:25, 17 June

Other than having those words in their names, how are they representative of the region? Much like sports teams the characters aren't from those regions, their sponsors/owners aren't from those regions, and in sports some of the time they don't even PLAY in those regions (See NY Giants playing in New Jersey for example).

NY Giants is the New York Metro area team. The Metro area extends into New Jersey. East Rutherford, the location the Giants play, is a suburb of NYC. The NY Jets (who play at the same stadium) represent the city itself. Neither team represents the state. Not to take away from your point, just explaining it the NY Giants situation.
