> I mean take Jack White for example. He's kind of a giant douchebag, and he talks a lot of unwarranted shit about other artists. Doesn't matter though, since he makes le real music
I don't particularly like Jack White either. But he's not really that popular any more, so it's easy enough to just ignore him.
I don't hate Kanye like I hate Chris Brown, it's not like he beat up Rhianna or something. But what else has Kanye said? http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2014/06/05/kanye-west-self-confident-quotes-generator/10036311/
These are all real Kanye quotations, gems such as, "I’M LIKE A VESSEL, AND GOD HAS CHOSEN ME TO BE THE VOICE AND THE CONNECTOR." "I AM SO CREDIBLE AND SO INFLUENTIAL AND SO RELEVANT THAT I WILL CHANGE THINGS." "WHEN SOMEONE COMES UP AND SAYS SOMETHING LIKE, ‘I AM A GOD,’ EVERYBODY SAYS ‘WHO DOES HE THINK HE IS?’ I JUST TOLD YOU WHO I THOUGHT I WAS. A GOD. I JUST TOLD YOU. THAT’S WHO I THINK I AM."
The guy thinks he's a god. How could you not hate the guy? I mean I liked his first couple albums, but I have a hard time buying anything from a guy who says things like that. I don't begrudge him his music, but if he'd let the music speak for itself I'd respect the man. At the end of the day he doesn't really effect me, that's true, but if I'm going to make fun of someone (which is inevitable), might as well make it Kanye.
You don't see a hint of humor or exaggeration in those quotes?
Even if he's trying to be funny, he's being unsuccessful. Also, from the guy who interrupted T-Swift? Maybe if he hadn't done that I'd be more inclined to take it more as an act.
He's not trying to be funny. He's being tongue-in-cheek. Also everyone knows the T Swift thing was an act too. Dummy.
> He's not trying to be funny.
I fail to see the distinction between that and
> You don't see a hint of humor
And
> He's being tongue-in-cheek.
So he gets a pass to go out there and act like an asshole consistently as long as it's "Just an act". OK then. If all he does is act like an asshole, even if he's trying to be funny, he's still an asshole.
There is a difference between trying to be funny, putting on an act, and being tongue in cheek. He's doing one of those and I've explained it twice now.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tongue-in-cheek
"Tongue-in-cheek is a figure of speech used to imply that a statement or other production is humorously or otherwise not seriously intended, and it should not be taken at face value. The facial expression typically indicates that one is joking"
The common usage of the term implies a joke. But whatever, I'm not arguing about this any more. I'll just agree to disagree with you. In my opinion Kanye's an asshole.
>even if he's trying to be funny
>>trying to be funny
>>>funny
/u/45flight literally just said he's not being funny. You even quoted him saying that in the same comment.
I took "You don't" as in I personally don't see a hint of it, meaning I should see a hint of humor in it. And tongue-in-cheek means humorously intended; so I think my interpretation of that is actually quite correct. I don't see how you could try to "Not be funny" and be "Tongue in cheek"
On the other hand I think we may all be able to agree it's kind of funny how Kanye fans are getting their panties in a bunch over me calling him an asshole and are now trying to nitpick about the difference between humor and "tongue-in-cheek"... It's not like I said Kanye fans are all assholes.
This explains the whole tongue-in-cheek thing clearly.
Woah dude no need to pull out vulgur words
