It depends which subreddits you hang out in I suppose. I guess I must spend too much time here, but I've been called a racist a few times just for saying I don't find black people attractive. Or been told that only white people can be racist. I know that sounds mental, but there are people who believe racism means these things.
Edit: As the reply's/downvotes seem to be pointing out :)
I've never seen that even here. I have seen people make fun of someone complaining about "racism" against white people as if it were as big of a deal as racism against marginalized groups, because that misses the point of why racism is problematic - not because it's not nice to judge people based in their race, but because systematic racism thoroughly fucks up people's lives. Likewise, having a personal preference for members of your own race as sexual partners isn't necessarily racist, but going on and on about it, loudly and proudly, as if anyone is supposed to give a fuck that you think all members of X race are ugly, absolutely can be. All about context.

I completely agree. Unfortunately you can get called a racist here just for saying you prefer one race over another.
>Unfortunately you can get called a racist here just for saying you prefer one race over another.
Dude.
Come on.
Come on, dude.
I never called you racist mate. I said you ruling out 1 race of people is grounded in racist bias. You tried to play victim by claiming I shamed you for your preference. You then compared not being attracted to black people the same thing as not liking blondes or red heads. You then took it further by saying its like shaming someone for not liking short women or fat people.
Through all that fuckery, I never called you racist although you tried hard to play victim like your sexual orientation was being shamed.
Secondly, no one in SRD will ever get upvoted for saying only white people can be racist so that's utter bollocks my friend.
proof
I wasn't even talking about the conversation I had with you. But seeing as you linked it you did say in that conversation:
'Like it or not, ruling out one race is racist.'
So yeah, you kind of were.
If you're not talking about that conversation, which one were you talking about? How much time do you spend talking about how you don't find black people attractive? "Having a type" is one thing. Feeling the need to go on and on and on about it is another. Like I said, it's all about context.
Unfortunately on this subreddit it's more conversations than I would like, look further through my post history if you don't believe me.
It's not about needing to go on and on about it, more a need to defend myself when I'm called a racist. I mean, we are on subredditdrama, so the issue does come up a lot. It's not like it's me starting it. I think any forward thinking person would object to being called a racist. I'f I were you I'd be more worried about the people who don't defend themselves when they are called a racist.
But in the thread Mach-2 linked, people were complaining more about the popularity of the topic than anything. Why is this preference so important to you that you need to defend it whenever people point out that it's a little weird how much redditors like to talk about how unattractive they find black people?
I mean, people talk about this "preference" in a very different way than they do other "preferences." You might hear someone say "I prefer redheads," but you're much less likely to hear them say "I don't find brunettes attractive, ever, at all." But you hear that all the time when it's race they're talking about, and not hair color. Nobody is obligated to pretend to find people attractive who they don't just to be "PC," but the way you talk about your attractions can be unintentionally revealing.
Agreed, people don't say "I don't find brunette's attractive, ever, at all." They say, "I'm not into brunettes."
Also, people don't say "I don't find black people attractive, ever, at all" They say, "I'm not into black people."
> But you hear that all the time when it's race they're talking about, and not hair color.
I have never heard this on reddit, at least not on subreddits that aren't blatantly racist. If someone did then that's fucked up and I'm sorry. But my only experience on reddit has been having to defend myself for having preferences, which is also fucked up.
Well, I disagree with the way you're framing this: you are far less likely to hear people state their hair color preference negatively ("I'm not into brunettes") than positively ("I'm into redheads.") I think you're taking comments about the "DAE black girls are ugly" circlejerk too personally.
> you are far less likely to hear people state their hair color preference negatively ("I'm not into brunettes")
Really? Have you ever used Tinder? "I'm not interested in short guys" is on many, many girls descriptions. (I'm not short before you accuse me of short man syndrome :p) I don't have an issue with it, I think it's better to be honest about what you prefer. I'd never call them hightist.
Tinder's a dating site. I thought we were talking about conversations on reddit. Again, context.

Again, there is a difference between doing something racist and being racist. You could be ignorant and subconsciously racist, does that mean you're terrible? No. It means you are ignorant and raised that way. So nah, not really.
lol. having a preference for lighter skin tones is not racist no matter how much you want it to be for some weird reason.
Calling it preference like it originated in a vacuum and that so happens to be what society lauds is incredibly foolish. Sorry mate, I know it's difficult admitting you have racist biases, it hurts, I know. But playing dumb isn't helping you.
right whatever, i want to kill all them people who don't have exactly the same genetic code as me you're right. good luck and good bye
Classic. Throw a tantrum and run away with hyperbole. Good chat. Cheers.
no problem
Yeah, racism is just a switch that's either set to on or off. It's not like growing in an incredibly racist society, you know, rubs off on people.
Rory O'Neill had an interesting speech about this, with homophobia in place of racism. Here's the relevant part of the transcript:
> But I want to say that it is not true. I don’t hate you.
> I do, it is true, believe that almost all of you are probably homophobes. But I’m a homophobe. It would be incredible if we weren’t. To grow up in a society that is overwhelmingly homophobic and to escape unscathed would be miraculous. So I don’t hate you because you are homophobic. I actually admire you. I admire you because most of you are only a bit homophobic. Which all things considered is pretty good going.
Consider the part I bolded. Thinking that racism or homophobia is just a switch that is either on or off is extremely damaging. It makes people care more about avoiding being called racist or homophobic than it does make them consider whether their thoughts or actions are homophobic or racist, whether they are homophobic/racist themselves.
We grow up in a culture that still isn't free of these prejudices. Someone suggesting that you picked up one of these prejudices isn't calling you weak or bigoted or saying that you're a KKK member. Because we all, black & white, gay & straight, have hang-ups because of the enduring prejudices of society. It's important to accept & own that, & work against it.
What you have said is completely true. However, having a sexual preference is not racist. It could debatably be prejudiced. I prefer lighter skin tones, fuck me right. People throw the term 'racist' around too much these days, especially on here.
