>Yell "everybody hit the ground, I'm going to shoot the lunatic!" Then proceed to shoot the fucker. It's really not that hard, just use your brain.
That's exactly how panicked herds of people behave--always listening to that one lone hero who was smart enough to bring his gun!
People are not mindless drones. They do think in that kind of situation. A plain clothes policeman yelling "get on the ground" would work just as well as a civilian yelling the same thing.
I think not; for the following reasons:
the attacker is drunk; he is not likely be able to make a rational decision
to shoot to disable is hard, even with a bigger target area compared to "shoot to kill", and...
this will be made harder by the fact that there are people crying, screaming and moving at unpredictable directions between the gun-slinger and the attacker, and finally,
if the gun-slinger screws up, now the knife attacker becomes a gun-and-knife attacker.
Why would they be shooting to disable?
Someone stabbed four people to death. I think at that point you're justified in shooting for center mass
He definitely wasn't drunk. Taiwanese articles noted that he had a BAC of .04% --looking for my source now
Monday morning quarterbacking always upsets me a little.
edit: never trust a computer.
Do you mean Monday morning quarterback, or is this a new phrase?
hah, monday i meant. Fucking autocorrect.

A gun may have helped and it may not have.
Most people don't seem to understand what adrenaline does to your body in situations like these.
The odds that a guy with a gun would make a poor decision is pretty high.
I'm actually really surprised that he got -59. On /r/news this would have been at +30, at least.
I've lived in NYC for 45 years and have been in a crowded subway car when shit got real. if anyone thinks firing a gun in a subway car would be easy is a dumbass. In fact I bet his ass has never even been in a subway.
The answer is: Most likely, yes. A person with a gun could have stopped the stabbing.
Or they could not be an expert shot and make things a lot worse.
No need for shooting targets at 75m with a 9mm. This is a defensive situation, no need for expert marksmen.
Dude, do you even own/shoot guns?!
Considering that your body , by now, has dumped close to its entire excess supply of adrenaline into your blood stream . . .
So? No need to even use sights at that distance. No one uses sights shooting IPSC or IDPA at those distances. With everyone on the ground, you're good to go.
Again, dude, do you even have a gun or shoot one?
If you did you would know you speak rubbish.
Sure thing boss. And yes I own several rifles but have shot over 4-500 rounds in various handguns
Ok, you should go back to shooting them because 500 rounds is NOTHING :D
Search for an IPSC or IDPA competitions.
Mostly rentals for a change of pace every few weeks. I may purchase one in the future, but I still haven't found one to my liking. I like the idea of a suppressed .22lr though it wouldn't be very practical.
If you think of using guns for selfdefense, get yourself glock 17 if you are a big man or glock 26 if you like to go really conceiled.
Join a club where they shoot IPSC. Suppressed .22lr? Why?!
Something to carry while camping. I don't want a CC or EDC. I live in an area where it's unlikely to need it. Mostly for sport and so my friends and their SO's would be able to have fun with it.
You don't need to be an expert shot at 2-5m distance
There still wouldn't have been a stabbing. Just a shooting.
Of course.
Yell "armed citizen, everybody on the floor!" and kill the motherfucker.
Make sure you 360 no-scope so the kill cam looks cooler.
And afterwords, say something cool like "have an ice day"
"Looks like this is your stop."
Glance around the stunned crowd, point at the dead guy and calmly say "No ticket"
