"oh, you made a joke about frats, you must just be jealous"
Whenever someone makes a hilarious frat joke they all come out of the woodwork like they're being oppressed. It's amazing.
Usually the people who mock fraternities are more ignorant than jealous, at least from my experience.
Yes only an ignoramus would ever dare mock the unimpeachable greatness of fraternities.
Frat douche detected
No, the fraternities are just too varied to to mock as an entire thing. There are tons of fraternities that are strictly for professional networking or even volunteering, the idea that frats and sororities are just for the bros or sorostitutes is pretty wrong.

I think it's safe to say that when someone mocks frat douches they mean social frats.
But even within social frats there is still a massive variation. I was in a co-ed fraternity (weird I know) and my sister was in a sorority and both had primarily social missions but neither of us would have been caught dead in about 1/3 of the greek organizations on campus. There stereotypical greek organizations definitely exist but there is a lot more than just those people.

FTFY (With a little real grammar thrown in.)
Someone didn't get a bid
Ignorant meaning that they don't know what fraternities are actually about
I don't think you know what the word ignorant means. Most people I meet who mock fraternities weren't in one, had never been around one long enough to accurately learn about them, etc.
When I was in college they had a very bad stigma. 10 years later, I kinda wish I'd joined one, mainly for trustworthy connections.
You can make trustworthy connections without paying for them upfront.
You're not paying for friends, you're pooling money for the house, alcohol, insurance and bands. It's no different than if you and your best friends had a monthly pool you put money in that you used for parties and booze.
Except before you join it's a bunch of strangers instead of being, you know, your best friends.
Not really, that's what rush is for. You rush and find a place that fits who you are-if you don't like them, don't accept a bid. If they don't think you fit you don't get one. Plus there's a 8-10 week process where you can quit, no strings attached and go someplace next year. You don't fit in you go somewhere else, pretty easy. And after pledgeship, there's still some guys who I don't hangout with often, but that's cool. We may not be best friends but worst comes to worst, we got each other's backs. If done right nothing brings people together better.
Eh, I do it as a joking eternal jocks vs. nerds war, but I have no real hatred towards responsible frats. Now, the ones that condone rape, abuse, and alcohol poisoning as some sort of Stockholm Syndrome team building, those ones can fuck off.
There are very few reasons why someone would go out of their way to criticize something that they know nothing about.
I like how shitting on Greek life is a-ok but the second someone tries to call someone out on it they are the bad guy.
This thread is no different then the OP.
Am I the only one that instantly thinks someone is an insufferable prick when they use the term "Greek life?"
No.
I bet actual Greek people are getting really confused. I wonder if they also invade Greek festivals.
It's called a joke, dude.
I can't understand you, bro. Spit or swallow.
Sick burn bro.
Glad to see that out of the angry neckbeards rabidly down voting anyone in this thread who talks about Greek life in a positive light the best response they have is a middle grade level insult.
Reddit's hatred for all things Fraternity related is something I will never understand. I truly believe it enriched my college experience and I think my brothers and I did some real good in the community along the way.
I had friends in high school but it was more casual, we could talk about stuff but we weren't really close. The only people I had who I felt were really there for me were my mom and dad (which is pretty sad). And when I left for college I pretty much lost contact with all of them, aside from the veneer of friendship that Facebook gives us. I thought it was going to be the same thing at Uni, just make these superficial friends to go to parties with, eat lunch with but never really get to know. And frankly at the time I didn't even think about joining a frat, not that I had anything against them. Then I met Frank.
Frank was an upper-classman who I was taking this applied mathematics course with my first semester (it was his second time taking the class, lol). About 2 weeks into the semester Frank came over and sat next to me, introduced himself and we pretty quickly became buddies. We would sit and talk for a few minutes before and after class, just bullshitting about stuff and it was really nice just to have someone to talk to. Well you can probably guess where this is heading but Frank was in a frat, and suggested that I pledge. Well, I didn't really know anything about frats and I told him as much. I'll never forget the words Frank used to describe Fraternity life because I think in some ways they changed my life for the better that day. He said, "it's a community of men who can come together and jerk eachother off and suck eachother's dicks without society judging us." Wow. I pledged later that afternoon.
Well done
Only nerds make fun of frats, right?
