Hi Reddit! how are you doing? QGYH2 here. You may remember me from test post please ignore or being that person who mods some reddits (or not).

In the time I've been here, reddit has evolved from a popular website to something more, and the nature of the site has changed a bit too.

Anyway, I used to be active on reddit, then I sort of vanished..

...I think I owe redditors an explanation - over the last few months, my health took a bit of a turn for the worse. I suffer from two general problems - some sort of RSI related thing no body could pin down, and depression.

The RSI thing got worse I couldn't really use my PC much which really sucked because hey, its my thing (I think?).

And the depression thing sucked because... well depression sucks! At about the same time I lost my job.

Now I'm slowly trying to get my life together. Some days are good, others are not so great. I'm seeing various doctors who are trying to figure out whats up with me..

Anyway... I just wanted to say...

  1. Thank you all. Redditors, and mods. You are nice folk.
  2. I'm really sorry I'm not moderating reddits much these days, and if you sent me a message and I didn't respond, I'm really sorry.
  3. I haven't forgotten TL;DR. I miss it so much. Hope to get back to doing that someday.

edit: I guess I should have said something without just remaining silent but I just feel bad talking about my problems - as others have problems too, some worse than me. But remaining silent wasn't fair to other mods particularly - thus this post.

I'm really sorry to hear about all of that and I hope things turn around for you, but even though I have never modded with you - I have heard/seen more than enough to convince me that you are one of the major problems with this website. Without really going much further into things than what /u/rolmos, /u/creesch, and /u/davidreiss666 have already said, I just wish you modded/cared about all of your top mod spots in all of the defaults that you collect like Pokemon cards.

Cheers.

No shit. He had a spat with /r/mensrights awhile back about his ad on there. Big outcry from community, who felt beardhurt. Then he spoke with the moderation team and resolved the issue quickly and in a manner that frankly, everyone seems to like at this point.

All other discussions I've had with him have been on pretty positive terms as well.

I'm sorry for your personal problems, but I'll get this off my chest:

The way you run the subreddits you are head mod off have made them worse than if you had just gone away and let others take charge. The way you handled /r/worldnews, for example, and how the best and most active mods quit (including me) because of your senseless vetoes really killed the place.

You were lucky to get ownership of many subreddits early on, but have left many to rot, vetoing the opinions of people that have grown to know those communities better than you.

If you don't have the time to head those subreddits, stop being selfish and demod yourself. Inactive mods kill subreddits.

> Two mods were removed on the basis of repeated user complaints as well as due to the request of other mods.

I could spend hours detailing why I quit WN, and why I also quit /r/web_design and /r/apple, but I don't want to turn this into a heated discussion or anything. Just please stop lying. Those other mods were forced out.

Just accept that you love being top mod, that the position gives you the power to do whatever you want in those subreddits, and that you do sometimes use that power to shape moderation regardless of what more active mods recommend.

You quickly grabbed a ton of subreddit names, and never had the time to properly moderate all of them. You have no obligation to leave them, but you do harm communities that you no longer know anything about. It's your right to do so, since this is how Reddit works, but I simply wanted you to realize why that attitude is harming communities.

I don't understand why you insist on avoiding commenting on the fact that many of your subreddits don't need you, and why you've decided to remain as top mod in them, regardless of how that has negatively affected them.

Anyone could have created them though, he was just quick/lucky to grab names that would be popular.

One thing to note is that in some subreddits where he is top mod, he didn't actually create them. I know in /r/AskReddit where he is top mod currently, someone like "/u/noname99" or something created it and qgyh2 inherited the subreddit. An old-time /r/AskReddit mod like /u/tuber or /u/karmanaut would have to correct/verify things for me there though.

Sorry to hear about you not doing well, but I'm not sorry that many of the sub-reddits you moderate have quite a heavy hand when it comes to censorship.

IMO, reddit is inherently democratic - people use upvotes/downvotes to generate the popularity of content. Limiting the types of content and websites people can submit to a particular subreddit is idiocy IHMO, and against everything the site is supposed to be about.

LOL actually the problem perceived by other mods was that qgy did stop us from doing what was needed. I guess this is a dark day for those who cry "censorship" at every corner. but to be honest, the only thing you people do is greatly cheapen the meaning of the worth by using it every corner and turn. It is actually disgusting for people actually living under true censorship and not even correct according to the definition: oppression of speech. You can barely speak of such a thing with a new sub only a few clicks away and the ability to create a new account within a minute. So as I said I think and believe that claiming "censorship" in inappropriate contexts greatly cheapens the true meaning of the word.

<3 u too, but I think it is censorship when a few mods that are not elected get to decide what constitutes news/worldnews/politics.

I don't throw the word around lightly, but the fact that 5 or 6 mods can just choose to ban sites they don't like or disagree with is abuse of moderator privilege. Let the users decide.

It is not a democracy, admins have stated it before that mods are completely free to run their own ship how they see fit. Fact is that it is extremely easy to circumvent your "censorship" by creating a new account, sub, etc. So yeah... it is a loaded word used without meaning thereby cheapening it for those cases where people do face actual censorship.

I am actually wondering how long you have been on the internet? As far as I can remember people have had this power, in fact I think that even with the mods here "oppressing the masses" you still have more freedom to do whatever the fuck you want than on 90% of the rest of the internet.

> I've seen people act like complete douchebags when they get power online

Not sure if you are calling me a douchebag here... I am going with no. In any case I also have seen the complete opposite. People working hard and investing a lot of time in order to make a subreddit work. People being patient towards angry peoples over and over again, people responding politely to shitty users with a feeling of entitlement the size of a galaxy.

It simply is not as black and white is you make it out to be, can't make it much simpler as that.

  • [-]
  • dr0ne_
  • -7 Points
  • 00:11:02, 31 October

As someone who has been and is a mod/admin, I know it isn't black and white - and I'm not calling you a douchebag.

I'm saying that most of these changes (especially /r/worldnews and /r/news) were done while the majority of the community cried out in opposition. There was little (if any) justification given for the removal of certain websites, and when I personally asked admins to provide proof, was brushed off.

This is power-tripping, this is (what I would call) censorship, and this is what I would call douchebaggery.

If you cannot see where I am coming from here, it's moot to discuss further; however, I would be happy to elaborate if you need me to.

  • [-]
  • creesch
  • 3 Points

> the majority of the community cried out in opposition.

I am not sure if I agree with calling the people that are able to make the most noise the majority. I could write a really long story here but let me just point out that even during the highest points of unrest you are dealing with a few thousand users on a userbase of a few million. That simply is not a majority, it is an indication of how one group of users feel about the subreddit at that particular time. Saying that those people are the majority would be a kick in the face towards all the other users. Do you want to kick people in the face? I don't...

> There was little (if any) justification given for the removal of certain websites,

During my time at worldnews we removed blogspam (blogs with a high amount of adds and often rehosted content with poor sourcing) we did this on a case per case basis except for those websites that had proven over time to be only blogspam. We kept an close eye on websites known for pushing an agenda, this in combination with mostly the users submitting those websites. That is as far as it did go in regard to removing specific websites.

All in all I have seen vague accusations and pointing fingers. So yeah... I guess it's moot to discuss it further since you clearly don't (Want to) see where I am coming from. And that is actually ok, because that is how diverse reddit is, but that is also why you can always safely assume that you are not a majority.

I was going to say something, but it seems rolmos has mostly covered it.

I'm simply confused, as to why if you were having health problems, why didn't you give us updates instead of simply dropping in with your vote on something. You could have spent that time letting us know what was up. We all care for everyone very much in every subreddit I have ever moderated.

I also find it funny that this is happening now, but that can be discussed later.

That said, it's very good to know that you're doing better. I know what depression is like and it's no fun.

Just because two things are something doesn't mean one thing is the other thing. It's basic inheritance.

If that just doesn't make as much sense as it does in my mind, think about it this way: narwhals and cats are both animals, but just because both are animals doesn't mean a narwhal is a cat.

Depression isn't an excuse for completely neglecting your reddit responsibilities and refusing to pass the torch to people who actually do the job. I deal with depression on a daily basis. If you don't have time for reddit anymore, step down as a mod, don't sit there inactive on the mod list and pop back in once in a blue moon just to fuck shit up or impede progress. Your actions are harming reddit.

If you had any respect for your fellow mods at all you would step down.

I'm not trying to say you don't suffer from depression, but when I browse Reddit and I read comments I get the feeling that depression is over diagnosed. Is there anybody else around here that does not suffer from depression?

I feel a lot of people may self-diagnose just because they have off-days every now and then. It might also be that depressed people are more likely to spend time at home on the computer, and that reddit provides a nice anonymous environment to pretend that they're socialising on.

  • [-]

A lot of people on this site are also depressed because they spend too much time on the internet and not enough on......well living. I think there's a clear link between the two that most seem to be unwilling to acknowledge.
