I have a dream that in the future countries won't go to war at each other, subreddits dedicated to those countries will go to war with each other in their stead!
Probably be more hurt feelings but slightly fewer lives lost... I support this dream.
Surface Detail by Iain M. Banks. (Article contains spoilers).
Man, I loved that guy's work. RIP.
National subreddits attract a very specific type of person, which is why I tend to ignore them completely.
r/unitedkingdom is generally pretty good. A tendency towards groupthink perhaps, but all subreddits have that to some extent.
The /r/Canada version of this kind of groupthink would be a staggering hatred of our three major telecom companies. Of course, this rancour is utterly justified.
You forgot the anti-First Nations brigade, the blatant pro-Liberal hivemind, and the "war" with /r/metacanada.
Yeah, I haven't frequented /r/canada in some time, but from what I remember of it, it was like they'd taken every cliche about the reddit hivemind and turned it up a notch.
Reddit hates big corporations? /r/canada really hates big corporations.
Reddit hates right-wing politicians? /r/canada really hates right-wing politicians.
Reddit has some weirdly racist/xenophobic opinions on ethnic minorities? /r/canada has some really weirdly racist/xenophobic opinions on ethnic minorities.
Reddit loves weed? /r/canada really loves weed.
Etc.
And the guns.
Jesus Christ it makes /r/Murica blush.
Fair enough. I suppose I just remember the bias that I am in zealous agreement with.

It was pretty good when it was satire
good satire is a delicate thing, a subtle art
reddit, crowdsourced as it is has the clumsy fingers of a 4 year old
I could not bear to visit it regularly, i find that living in ignorance is indeed bliss. I really do not want to have to sit and read Labour, Tory, Lib Dem, SNP, Green Party etc. voters all arguing why everybody but them is a bunch of cunts.
Especially seeing as im Scottish and im sick to death of the Independence debate, i want it over with asap.
we generally all agree that all the parties are cunts tbf.
Yes, I would say that the prevailing opinion isn't support for one party or belief over another, but rather total disgust at our politics and politicians as a whole.
City subreddits are mostly fine. I've never seen one from a country outside the US though.
The only country sub I'm familiar with is /r/thailand because it ends up here so often. That's probably not giving me a very accurate picture of their day to day operations, I doubt they're always arguing with sex tourists.
Oh, wait, I've also seen /r/newzealand pop up a few times. I like the cut of their jib.
/r/newzealand is the best when it pops up here. everyone is so damn sarcastic and trolly.
They won me over when they realized that crazy gun lady had reddit gold auto-notifying her every time her user name appeared in a post so they all just started inserting it into every post on every topic. That is some quality mockery right there.
> I doubt they're always arguing with sex tourists.
Only about half the time, really.
/r/brighton has some decent activity.
Yeah. Good place to go for city happenings.
I'm one of the moderators of /r/russia , and it used to be much more decent before the Crimean Crisis. It usually breaks down to Russians, Russians living in other countries, Western folk who spend a good amount of time pointing out Western hypocracy (gets annoying after a while), and as of recent, invaders from /r/UkrainianConflict and /r/ukraine. I blame the fact that they put a link of our sub on the former. I can't wait for all of this to die down already, getting annoyed by shilling accusations
It wasn't r/ukraine, its just unknown loyalists /s
Looks like the babushka is one the other foot.
Isn't that a hat?
It means old lady.
It means grandmother, but it is also an informal term for the scarves that older women wear.
I believe you're thinking of an Ushanka
I gotta say, in terms of actual facts and cogent arguments Russia just got bitch-slapped by the Ukraine in there.
Well that's because anyway you slice it, Russia invaded the Crimea and took it over. I mean c'mon there is absolutely no way a bunch of Crimean separatists overran Ukrainian military bases and there's no way the elections weren't completely rigged. It wouldn't have been more blatant if Putin ran around in his underwear with a neon sign shouting "I'm invading the Crimea!"
Now whether a significant portion of Crimeans actually cared, what was Putin's thinking and strategy was and how the rest of the world would react are the big questions.
> Now whether a significant portion of Crimeans actually cared
If Vice news is anything to go by, a significant portion did care. They were also the kind of people that bring riot shields to peaceful pro-ukraine protests, and beat up the wives of soldiers as they try to bring food into the blocked bases, however.
> there's no way the elections weren't completely rigged.
I could argue with that, considering the amount of attention from the media on the referendum

> An illegal peaceful annexation is still an illegal annexation.
> United Kingdom flair
Man, I bet the no kings or queens from that particular set of islands has ever taken anyone else's land.
I kid, is joke.
Those annexations weren't peaceful so it's fine.
(Serious answer : that was a century ago.)
One person advocated that since the Crimea is mostly Russian, then Russia has every right to annex it. Of course, while ignoring the fact that the area is actually still within another state's boundaries.
I guess I shouldn't be that surprised someone would have that belief, but it would be morbidly funny if every nation had that policy.
If we're going to start carving countries up into little tiny nation-states again, can we bring castles back?
Like, seriously, I got some bitchin' land out west what's begging for some ramparts.
I think castles should be brought back regardless!
That's also the same logic Hitler used regarding Czechoslovakia and Austria and the Rhineland. I know argument ad hitler is frowned upon, but still.
> Right, right, good to know! And those are really interesting conversations i guess, /r/europe[1] and /r/worldnews[2] are full of experts on Russia i must say, literally everyone is expert on Russia these days, thanks to the media! Really great conversations those must be! > > /r/russia[3] on the other hand lacks experts on Russia, it's hard to deny it.
