There's some really bad ones on here and I don't want to be redundant, so I'll throw in one that I want to get off my chest.

/r/aspergers really, really irritates me.

My brother is 26 years old and was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome in 1991. As part of his therapy, he got to know other kids who had it too. It made it easier to deal with the many problems we had to deal with.

Recently, Aperger's has become 'trendy' for hypochondriacs to diagnose themselves with. Cracked ran an article a couple years ago that sums this up perfectly.

>I mean, if you don't go talk to an expert but just gloss over a list of symptoms, what you learn is that people with Asperger's "lack inborn social skills," "may not understand a joke," "avoid eye contact," "may feel 'different' from others," "find it frustrating and emotionally draining to try to fit in" and "are typically uninterested in following social norms, fads or conventional thinking, allowing creative thinking and the pursuit of original interests and goals." You know who is going to latch onto that? Every goddamn teenager in the world (and many adults).

I go into /r/aspergers every now and then when my brother does something so outlandish that I have no idea how to deal with it (one time he suddenly developed a random obsession over shaving, and could not stop himself until there was blood everywhere). There are some actual people on that subreddit who either have it or are in my situation, but there are far too many who are the type that the Cracked article described.

It might sound self-righteous to call these people out, but now when I tell people why my brother behaves the way he does, they play it off like it's a personality trait like introversion. People who have never been around actual Aspies have no idea what the disorder's like, and it bothers me that outcast high school loners have taken it over.

TL;DR If you have Asperger's or live with someone that has it, tread carefully in its subreddit.

The same infuriates me too, when people claim they have "OCD" just because hurr hurr alphabetical order. OCD is a horrible thing and that stupid, small neat-freak desire is not the same as someone who wants to kill himself because he or she can't stand the mental torture that actual OCD is.

I don't think people reazlie it isnt like Monk where you become a superpower detective. It's more like having to wear moisturized gloves because you wear your hands raw and dry over having to wash them every 15 minutes or circling the block 3 times before you can enter a building.

Exactly. There's a guy that lives across the street from me that obsessively checks his car. I don't even know what he's inspecting, but he goes through a whole routine that takes a few minutes, starts back toward his house, then turns around and goes through it all over again and again.

Lately, he's been coming out with a checklist, and that seems to help, but he'll still go through the routine multiple times.

And that's just what I can see. I can't imagine what he does indoors. I wouldn't wish it upon anyone.

/r/breakingbad man when the show was on it was an awesome community but now it's awful. I go every once in a while to see what's going on but it's just hundreds of drawings of the season 4 Walter poster. What finally made me leave was this post someone made of them and someone making crystal ornaments for Christmas or something, not BB branded, not even blue, just standard crystal looking ornaments you can find in the store. It had hundreds of up votes, that was the day /r/breakingbad died for me.

Totally. I understand what they were going for with the "no default subs thing", but it kind of killed it.

Getting "best of'd" used to be kind of like getting gilded, but better. If I wanted the highlights of reddit for the day but didn't have time to browse, /r/bestof was my go to.

I used to LOVE /r/bestof and would read it daily, but my interest in that sub quickly dwindled after they removed default sub submissions. I don't really understand why the best comments on reddit need to be split into /r/bestof and /r/defaultgems.

To me, that subreddit became "Look at this post. Let's go upvote-brigade it while downvote-brigading whoever he's replying to while also commenting on how the bestovee has no clue what he's talking about and he should just go kill himself right now."

Everytime I click into the comments section on that subreddit I feel like I've landed on Youtube.

The Bestof effect has been so severe that a lot of subreddits experience backlash when named Subreddit of the Day. Some users believe that a SROTD mention will introduce a huge influx of users and ruin the subreddit.

I wrote a message to the moderators of that subreddit once telling them that the subreddit has gone downhill ever since they disallowed posts from default subreddits. I got some snarky response that included:

"That is a large indicator that the real users support the change"

"real users".... way to alienate other people

That's the very thing that cemented my distaste for the subreddit. Before today, I merely saw it as source of occasionally interesting comments, but after seeing the shit it pulled today, it's not worth sifting through all of the nonsense for the few legitimately good posts. It's basically just a karma factory, where anyone can link to a long comment, regardless of the validity, and harvest all the karma in the world, while simultaneously giving the poster of the comment undue credibility.

"Pretentious idiot writes long-winded analogy to explain a thing people don't get."

"Hero tells tale of helping someone in need, is very humble, wow. Tears up while writing, makes note of it. Look at the gold."

"Someone desperate to be recruited anywhere as a writer takes a story from their life that probably didn't happen and makes it a long winded, overly detailed short story."

"Victim recounts something horrible happening to them, probably rape or violence, but also maybe drug abuse or a shitty home, in a wall of text that's probably highly embellished."

I had to unsub.

Try /r/DepthHub. It's like /r/BestOf except that the only links allowed are to deep, meaningful, genuinely useful, thought-provoking, and/or discussion-fostering posts and comments.

I guess that was sorta the original point of /r/BestOf, but /r/DepthHub is a stricter with enforcing that only links to quality posts should be submitted.

/r/Music just doesn't seem to work to me.

It's not badly moderated and it's not like the content is bad either, but as a concept I don't think it works. It's just a load of links that you probably aren't going to like that much, with titles that reveal nothing about what's inside. And realistically the only time something is upvoted it's because someone has heard it before and likes the song, I don't feel like there's any sort of musical discovery going on.

This isn't even really a criticism, I don't use it how it's meant to be used. It's just such an effort.

  • [-]
  • mattrition
  • 48 Points
  • 16:59:30, 11 December

I think this criticism really gets to the root of why /r/music is so poor. If the reddit medium is going to work for music, the listeners need to be prepared to listen to each track before they do any kind of voting. This is more how /r/listentothis works, primarily because the relative unfamiliarity of the titles prevents users from immediately voting on the link.

I was 13 when "Houses of the Holy" was released. It was THE soundtrack of my early adolescence and high school years.

About eight years ago I was at a friend's house, and came into the family room to find his then-14-year-old son, a budding young guitarist, watching a Led Zeppelin video ~~on MTV~~, a look of awe across his face. He turned to me and said, "Have you ever heard of these guys? They are really good."

Edit: Old guy here. Evidently there are intricacies involving exactly when MTV did or did not broadcast music videos of which I am completely unaware, that are causing some people to doubt the veracity of my tale. BFD. I got to see Jeff Beck play the Chicago Auditorium theatre in the 70's. Now get the fuck off my lawn.

Seether does an AMA and half of the replies are people telling them how bad of a band they are, just because they aren't a fan of their music. I don't go on /r/iama that often, but that seems like something that people don't usually do to people who are nice enough to take some time to acknowledge fans and answer questions.

Through the course of an entirely different thread/conversation, I ended up talking to the guy that runs that sub and one of the major guro sites on the web. I asked him how the hell he got into that sort of thing, it was pretty interesting. I guess he just started a bunch of different NSFW sites, guro being one of them, and it happened to be his most successful so he ran with it. Seemed like a pure business decision, which was the most interesting part to me

I'm a big fan of humor that makes me cringe (scott's tots anyone?), but there is just a ton of people who don't understand what cringe is on that sub. I'd say about 25% of the stuff posted is pictures that were supposed to be comical/not taken seriously, but the poster is too dumb to realize that and becomes the source of the cringe.

A lot of people just use it as a tool to publicly shame people, cringe doesn't even come into it. I'm not cringing when some hick on facebook makes a logically unsound point, you're just trying to feel superior in a really slimy way.

Tbh I hate the thing as a whole though, even if it is actually cringy. Just picking on people who are acting weird is not for me. I like weird people, usually they're interesting because they try new things even if they stray from the safety blanket of social normalcy. And importantly (even if they're only going through a phase) they do things that make them happy, regardless of what people say they can do, and I generally respect that.

Oh! I can't pick just one.

/r/gaming - The world's most dumbest teenagers and casual gamers collide in this rootin' tootin' subreddit. Watch and be amazed as a simple image of the box art of a well known game from the 90s accumulates 3000 upvotes, become confused and befuddled as the majority refers to Bioshock Infinite as the "citizen kane of video games", and laugh in amusement as lonely men create works of video game art in an attempt to convince his thick browed colleagues that his imaginary girlfriend or wife made it and gave it to him as a gift.

/r/theredpill - Like nonsensical acronyms? But hate the military, or anything that requires an IQ above 20? Boy do I have the place for you. TRP is the result of when a retard hops on google after being beaten by his mother and searches "Are there other retards like me?" and finds this magnificent subreddit as the first result. If you hate women and just want them to stay completely away from you, TRP offers great advice, such as throwing low hanging insults, making inappropriate advances and bathing in garbage before a date. The last one I made up but you really couldn't tell the difference, could you?

/r/ShitRedditSays - This subreddit is the internet's living embodiment of the quote "Act like a fool and find yourself surrounded by them." When they're not busy being unemployed on tumblr, or hate-lusting their polar counterparts over at TheRedPill, these brave souls venture into the scary, white male invested hive of "reddit.com" and search for the most vile, offensive comments that your mother MIGHT just roll her eyes at. Join others in cherry picking comments, banning those who have the optimism to think they'll listen to another opinion, and generally being SomethingAwful's second worst creation, right behind the video of Lowtax getting his ass kicked by a B-movie director.

/r/AdviceAnimals - Do you like repetitive inside jokes? How about seeing the same picture over and over again, with some different text? Or maybe you just want to stop the internet from moving on from beating a dead horse? Dive into this decade's most hip generation as they destroy every brain functioning adult's faith in humanity, one "Scumbag Steve" at a time.

Oh how could I forget. My old friends at /r/atheism! The subreddit so awful, they somehow squandered the privilege of being a default subreddit. If you're the kind of person who likes making family dinners awkward with a religious debate nobody wants to have, this subreddit is right up your alley. Cheer on fellow mouth-breathers as they tell their grandma to fuck off over facebook after she says she was "blessed" to survive that surgery. Maybe you pasted carl sagan onto a picture of space, and then credited him with a quote he never said. Where oh where can other fedora wearing morons like yourself appreciate this masterpiece you just created? Well over at Crazy Dawkins' Atheist Roundup, we welcome all intolerant nincompoops, young and old!

Edit: *World's dumbest. The irony is staggering.

Edit 2: Hey, some gold! Thanks! Just for that, here's one more.

Do you miss receiving random humor emails from estranged relatives? Do you not miss them and think you could use more? /r/funny has just the fix. It's is a unique place in where rules are created for the PURPOSE of being broken! So if you hate authority just as much as /r/videos hate cops, roll those mouses over to our belly-busting, knee slapping party of a subreddit, where "No pictures with just text" means "ALL THE PICTURES WITH TEXT!!1!1". We like internet humor, butt humor, edgy humor, you name it! But not actual, creative humor though, because a subreddit on this site actually doing what it's name describes sounds like "a joke" to us! bowtie spins, honks red nose

  • 18:57:22, 11 December

I personally don't believe they are acting superior to others, but let's put it this way, many of the people on that sub are quite literally addicted to masturbating. Now although studies have proven that masturbating lessens the risk of prostate cancer, good for you, etc. etc., for these guys the cons heavily outweigh the pros. Some of the things these people are facing include erectile dysfunction, female objectification, inability to keep a relationship and the list goes on. Although it seems like they are acting enlightened and whatnot, they are trying to break an addictive habit that is affecting their lives in a negative way. So while they're not spending $100 per hit of crack or killing themselves with heroin, it's still an achievement for them and I personally don't believe it's fair to degrade them for being overtly proud of their accomplishments. (Yes I know some people act melodramatic as if they've been touched by the hand of God but that doesn't apply for the whole sub) - just my two cents :)

Edit: Uhh stop pming me, Idgaf. I'm not 'mysoginistic manpig' and /r/Feminism does deserve bad press because they ban people who don't agree with them. I find Good Girl Gina a symptom of the problem that reddit thinks all its users are men. Good Girl Gina is actually Good Girlfriend Gina. And that's irritating. If a female friend does something particularly nice, I may have to create some sort of Good Girl Greg in a wig.

I don't see Gina nearly as much as Stacy. I do read Scumbag Stacy memes, because I like hearing people's stories of scumbags, but that doesn't' mean there aren't issues with that meme...

That's not a bad thing. /r/nfl is (IMO) the best subreddit.

/r/trees.

I like smoking weed as much as the next guy, but they are just a huge teenage circlejerk about how great weed is and how there is no drawbacks to its usage. Subs of that subreddit seem to think they know everything about everything related to weed, but its really just a cesspool for teens who think they are cool for smoking it, and giving bad advice to newcomers.

/r/funny, /r/pics, and /r/wtf are almost entirely interchangeable and 99% recompressed reposts. /r/science should be renamed /r/misninterpretationofscientificpapers

I honestly think I hate /r/politics the most. So many of those people embarrass me (a liberal-democrat). They confirm so many of the stereotypes of what conservatives do not like about liberals.

That subreddit is the epitome of presenting goals as solutions. It's very sophomoric.

Without that subreddit, how would you know who was recently "slammed" or "destroyed"?

r/trees. It's just the fucking most obnoxious shit. I wish there was a more mature weed related subreddit. I cringe every time I see them call themselves ents or their "frients" or posting stupid pictures of something with a pineapple or the same fucking shitty comics every day or that they think weed is just the most beneficial, nonharmful drug. It might be a better sub if the members would practice downvoting bad posts.

I just fucking hate potheads and I smoke weed fairly frequently.

it's primarily a circlejerk of young redditors complaining about their teachers and parents, OR complaining about people complaining about their parents and teachers. And it's one of the most frequently used subreddits

Don't forget all the parenting advise and telling poor people not to be poor.
