Every time I see this image I'm torn between (1) laughing and (2) shaking my head at the needless use of a slur for the sake of hyperbole.

~~I'm fine with people saying/typing nigger, faggot, cunt, etc. as much as they want, it's only when someone tries to defend it and say that it isn't disrespectful, hurtful, demeaning that I get pissed.~~

So calling someone lame literally means someone has dysfunctional limbs? And the person with the dog just have thought that the dogs face as actually homosexual. Words have many many meanings.

yeah except lame hasn't meant that for a very long time

faggot is something i still have yelled at me from moving cars

if you can't see the connection between the "gay man" meaning and the "anything i dont like meaning" and why that's bad then i really pity you.

Look, I am sorry you have gotten harassed before, but it's about context. The dog thing has nothing to do with homosexuality other than there being a word you have heard in an other context, which was offensive.

Why aren't I, a straight white male, allowed to call people faggots and niggers? They're just Le words!

Your use of slurs to create biting humor does not justify its promotion of language which often lends itself to hateful discourse.

Bigot words don't lead to bigot fights; bigot ideals lead to bigot fights. The word in question is simply that; a word. There are much more offense words; words that might not even be considered slurs. Lastly, humor doesn't follow the standard line of morality and ethics, because it if did, humor would be become horribly trite.

> Bigot words don't lead to bigot fights; bigot ideals lead to bigot fights.

This is a simple and inaccurate way of understanding the issue. It also falls under the Fallacy of Origin. Slurs associated with hate, even when used outside of an oppressive of malicious context, still may insult others by virtue of their connotations. Furthermore, the use of slurs may nonconsciously alter the way we think, reinforcing symbolic concepts which are conducive to hateful tendencies.

> The word in question is simply that; a word.

Words do not exist in a hermeneutical vacuum. Any symbolic anthropologist will tell you that language is inseparable from cultural values in its meaning, this is the power of metaphor. Your vocabulary associates yourself with homophobia and bigotry, and although you are doing this in a humorous way, it will not be received that way in all social contexts. Since reddit is a public forum, you have reason to use discretion.

> There are much more offense words; words that might not even be considered slurs.

That is true. This does not further your argument; in fact, it furthers mine.

> Lastly, humor doesn't follow the standard line of morality and ethics, because it if did, humor would be become horribly trite.

Agreed. That is why my original comment about the image macro regarded ethical divide. However, your response to it was mocking and targeted, near-exclusively utilizing hate speech. That's trolling, bullying, and an abuse of your right to pass it off as humor.

Bro, we all know you really don't give a shit, and if you do, you need to mature. Being condescending to a group of people about something so utterly pointless just makes you look like a douche, and it let's us all know you only care about being right. Go on, disagree, because you're differenet and you care and blah blah blah.

I see, that makes sense. Still, not that I think it's cool to go around calling people faggot, he's being unnecessarily condescending. "Looks like I'm going to have to baby you through this." I'm not even trying to back you up, I just think this guy needs to chill.

Yeah I agree with you, calling someone a faggot is very offensive, and I'm even uncomfortable with it. I just think this place of all places is a dumb one to start this kind of stuff.

Try to think about it with an open mind. Right now your strategy is dangerously close to that of real hate groups, by attempting to defer my ethical values to selfish motivation. That fallacy is the Straw Man -- an attack on a misrepresentation of my actual point.

I don't care about winning, obviously I'm not going to sway public support or your convictions. What I do care about is making people think about the topic of conversation in a way that is critical and not overly simplistic.

What we are discussing here might be ingrained trends of societal bigotry, and that's worth losing an argument over if it means I am shedding light on the possible severity of the issue.

Ok so you're trying to be some kind of martyr or prophetical voice that warns people they might be bigots. You know, I can relate to that, I really can, and on some degree I respect you for it, but I just really don't see the point in being "that guy" in this situation. This whole argument seems out of place, and I feel like the subject matter should be a little more meaningful, which is why it seems to me that you only want to be right.

And for the record, I don't personally think its completely OK for people to go around calling each other faggots. My real problem is that I don't see any point in this argument.

Hah, does seem out of place, and /r/firstworldanarchists is an ironic venue for any substantial argument.

Although a boring straight person myself, I've had a number of LGBQ friends in the past who might perceive a passing slur in humor as being very personally degrading; so I find purpose in raising the questions of "should we try to prevent this, and if so, how?"

Finally, debating things on reddit is a great way to hone your skills in presenting opinions in an effective and accessible manner; that carries over to the real world.

Pro tip: you don't have to insult someone in order to show or teach them something. If you respond without insult, people may listen to you. When you start with one, they're guaranteed not to.

Absolutely true. Although, at this point I am attempting to be somewhat more provocative in form rather than merely trying to present a level-headed argument, for the sake of trying to draw attention to myself. Perhaps that is undue negative attention and discourages actual engaged reading, but on the other hand, perhaps it will draw more eyes toward the actual body of my post :)

What do you think?

I didn't think about it that way. That might increase reading, but will probably prevent readers from respecting the opinion.

A generic slur, along the lines of calling someone stupid. What makes you think that the OP meant that the look his dog is giving him in anyway resembles a homosexual?

"Faggot" isn't a generic slur. It means something.

Hell, even your example of "stupid" as a generic slur is wrong. You wouldn't call someone stupid if you were trying to insult their looks.

  • [-]
  • AriBBCP

  • 22:56:07, 3 January

Its meaning doesn't stop someone from using it however they want.

I've seen people call yelling at a female "rape".

If someone is sucking a dick and you call them a "faggot", then it is in a homosexual context, if you call them a "faggot" for having a spare tire, then it doesn't mean anything and is just being used as a generic slur.

What is context, lol

Also, by "means something", you mean that it'd only make sense if being a "bundle of sticks" was something to be ashamed of, right?

That is why my original comment was addressing the intrapersonal divide between humor and bigoted associations. It's not about the literal meaning -- which is not obviously intended to be offensive -- it's about the potential implications of the language used.

Faggots are a traditional dish in the UK, especially South and Mid Wales and the Midlands of England. It is made from meat off-cuts and offal, especially pork. A faggot is traditionally made from pig's heart, liver and fatty belly meat or bacon minced together, with herbs added for flavouring and sometimes bread crumbs.
