As a German, it's really hard to grasp just how different America's attitude towards sex (and corporal punishment, but that's another story) really is. The behavior you describe is here only thinkable from the mentally ill or religious extremists.
Never encountered something like this in my entire life until I spent a year in the US.
I think it's fascinating that cultures that are so close, so heavily influenced by each other, can work so different in some aspects.
Being the most religious developed country, the U.S. has a very puritanical culture. Gratuitous violence is just fine in TV and movies, but god forbid you have nudity. Instant adult rating for nudity. A significant portion of the population is sexually repressed and socially awkward. The average age of first time sex is 17 in the U.S., but that average is probably significantly higher in the nerdy demographic of reddit. Abstinence is still widely taught in schools rather than more practical forms of birth control. (God, I didn't learn jack shit about sex in high school health class. Especially since it was taught by a really religious dude who used STI scare tactics and said you should wait for that "special someone" before having sex.) Another thing I've noticed on reddit is how a lot of feminists seem more like religious conservatives than actual social progressives.
>The most religious developed country
Oh please. Malta, Poland, Iceland, Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Denmark, Austria and Finland are among the dozens of developed countries with higher rates of Christianity than the USA
Go back and read that again. Pretty much all of Scandinavia, among the most sexually liberated countries in the world, have a higher percentage of Christian populations than the US.
Perception =/= reality
Scandinavia is not really Christian though. Technically they are but religion is pretty much never and issue, people don't go to church and most people don't subscribe to the teachings of Christianity. It's not at all the same as the US.
...No, that sounds very much the same as the United States.
>Developed Countries
>Poland
Silly /u/Robby5566, Poland cannot into developed! Poland cannot into space!
oh
Is that... lines between the colors? Inb4 DickRhino.
Ireland is hardly catholic.
The Republic of Ireland is over 84% Catholic, 94% Christian, compared to about a 75% Christian population in the US. Hardly my left nut.
The protestants are in Northern Ireland, which isn't part of the country of Ireland, and even then, if you combine both populations Christianity is still the majority religion.
How about actually practicing?
You can't leave the church.nhttp://www.irishtimes.com/news/social-affairs/religion-and-beliefs/church-defection-website-shuts-due-to-change-in-canon-law-1.1488263
They count everyone once baptised.
I'm Irish, very few people are religious.
Which is basically the same as in the US. Even in the south, the traditional religious ideal is held by a minority of the population, most of whom are middle aged or older. They just happen to be a fairly vocal minority. The majority of people, though they may attend church, have a much more relaxed view of religion.
The problem isn't that people here are religious, it's that someone always gives the asshole a microphone.
Agreed.
People often say (atheists, religious or any group of people are assholes due to a certain minority within the group).
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Please tell me that was a joke, there have been wars fought over catholic v protestant.
Are you serious?
Saying it's catholic's vs protestants is so retarded. Yes the majority of both sides were one of those denominations but certain churches/sects of protestantism were discriminated against the same way catholics were.
It was mostly nationalist vs unionist(assuming you're talking about the troubles and recent conflicts).
Religion is in free fall here if anyone is religious they're most likely culturally catholic as in they go maybe every christmas and easter.
I don't really care about specifics, the point was saying Ireland is hardly catholic is pretty laughable.
It depends on what you consider Catholic, in my opinion if you don't practice saying yes on a census/poll is misleading. Especially stats from the church as you aren't allowed to be ex-communicated, therefore inflating the numbers.
If you only take things at face value you are misjudging the situation.
The church still owns quite a bit of land and has it's hands in primary schools but they are losing more of their power every year.
A lot of this religious stuff in ingrained in Americans (nudity = bad, circumcision, treatment of poor people and animals) and I get the feeling they don't even know it.
*and they resent reading it.
> sex (and corporal punishment, but that's another story) really is. The behavior you describe is here only thinkable from the mentally ill or religious extremists.
It's not, really. In the USA, bible thumpers will literally beat you with their bibles if they think you've had sex. Parent's even of adult children will routinely beat them for having sex, in fact its even made light of on national daily television.
In schools here in USA, sex outside of marriage gets you referred to a psychologist, which either gets you loaded with drugs (profits for drug companies) or sent to prison (profits for prison companies).
It's really disgusting. USA is anti-sex, but teen pregnancy has risen to astronomical levels under the Bush-Obama regime. In Europe, that would never happen - they have real sex ed and don't hit their children. I really hate the USA a lot :(
Your point about schools is really only applicable for a very tiny percentage of schools...
I dunno where you're living, but you might want to consider moving away from there.
Just sayin'.
I'm calling bullshit on this.
>Parent's even of adult children will routinely beat them for having sex, in fact its even made light of on national daily television.
A lot of crazy stuff sometimes happens here, but I have honestly never seen this on tv. And I've certainly never seen it on a daily basis.
> It's really disgusting. USA is anti-sex, but teen pregnancy has risen to astronomical levels under the Bush-Obama regime.
This is absolutely false. Teen pregnancy rates have been declining for the last 20 years. [See here.] (http://www.hhs.gov/ash/oah/adolescent-health-topics/reproductive-health/teen-pregnancy/trends.html)
> I really hate the USA a lot
Clearly. DAE Europe is a utopia where teen pregnancy and child abuse doesn't happen?!
Careful, you'll raise the ire of /r/shitamericanssay
I normally don't comment on the anti-American circlejerk. I mean, I get it. A lot of really fucked up shit happens here and I've even done my fair share of bitching about it IRL. We probably all have.
But, If you let yourself get tunnel vision and only focus on the bullshit, you are missing out on so much wonderful stuff that happens.
