No, the middle class are treated as second-class citizens. The poor and homeless are treated as third-class.

The middle class pay for the public assistance to the poor, and if the homeless are sleeping in public parks, the middle class pay for the cleanup and upkeep of those places as well. You might want to reconsider your numbering system.

I think you're misunderstanding his point. The 1% are 1st class citizens as they can do whatever they want. Middle class is 2nd class citizens because we do have to abide by all the laws and pay the bulk of the taxes.

Not sure if I want to downvote for hyperbolic post, or upvote for post/username combo.

The post/username combo appeal is actually surprisingly strong.

I do.

I'm a full charge accountant with a degree and 10 years experience in my field.

I'm well respected in what I do and get well compensated for it.

However, on my drive to work, I go by a public Highschool. There are 16 year olds driving to high school in cars that I could never dream of affording!

In what world did I barely manage to scrape together $600 for my first car and at age 32 drive a modest Mazda and there are kiddos driving late model Mercedes to high school!

I hate the rich people.

I don't follow your logic, how does a high schooler with rich parents make you hate them? You are no worse off because the parents bought a car.

No, but I do have issues with the wealthy. There's a difference between rich and wealthy and if you don't know it don't worry about it.

Actually, there isn't a difference between rich and wealthy. By definition they are the same exact thing......but if you didn't know that, then I wouldn't worry about it.

The rich work for their money. The wealthy' money works for them so they don't have to work.

Rich people tend to have a lot of wealth, poor people tend to have little wealth. It doesn't make much sense to say that you have no problem with someone making one million dollars a year, but you have a problem with someone that uses that money to buy a big house. There is nothing inherently wrong with owning a big house.

>The 1% are 1st class citizens as they can do whatever they want.

In this case, if you substitute "government officials" for the 1%, then I would agree. The 1% usually have government officials in their back pocket, so by proxy, you're correct.

>Middle class is 2nd class citizens because we do have to abide by all the laws and pay the bulk of the taxes.

To be fair, the 1% as a group are the most heavily taxed compared to the rest of society, but they also get many perks for their $$ that the rest of society doesn't.

I'm just saying that the ranking might be a little skewed, because the middle class pays their "fair share" yet don't get the benefits that the other two groups squeeze from the system.

You're telling him to stop being dumb and yet the guy claiming 1% can do whatever they want, which is demonstrably untrue and ridiculous, is fine?

This sub just gets more and more painful to read.

I could swear many commenters are coming from /r/politics

If you can't get beyond your knee-jerk emotional issues with my comment, then that's your problem, not mine. The truth hurts sometimes, even when it doesn't fit your preconceived agenda.

I think he is mad at your assertion that the 1% pays anywhere near the bulk of the taxes. They don't pay the bulk and rarely even pay the amount the rest of us pay depending on what type of tax you're talking about.

The top 1% paying the bulk is a myth mostly created by the exact people were talking about to make themselves out to be the victim when in reality loop holes and tax havens make it so they're laughing all the way to the bank that they own.

Putting aside the argument that they "could" pay more, and also putting aside the tax havens and tax loopholes that have been setup to benefit the 1% (which again goes back to the ultra-rich having the government in their pockets).

Despite all that, the 1% still pay around 40% of the federal income taxes ibrought into the federal government. Up that to the top 10%, and the rich pay around 70% of federal income receipts. If that's not "the bulk" of taxes, then I'll have to get a better explanation on what you mean.

Progressivity in United States income tax:

>

>The United States federal income tax is considered to be progressive because rates of tax increase as taxable income increases.

>In general, the U.S. income tax is progressive, at least with respect to individuals that earn wage income. The lowest earning workers, especially those with dependents, pay no income taxes as a group and actually get a small subsidy from the federal government because of child credits and the Earned Income Tax Credit.

>"Progressivity" as it pertains to tax is usually defined as meaning that the higher a person's level of income, the higher a tax rate that person pays. In the mid-twentieth century, marginal tax rates (the rate applied to the last bit of income) in the United States and United Kingdom exceeded 90%. As recently as the late 1970s, the top marginal tax rate in the U.S. was 70%. In the words of Piketty and Saez, "... the progressivity of the U.S. federal tax system at the top of the income distribution has declined dramatically since the 1960s". They continue, "... the most dramatic changes in federal tax system progressivity almost always take place within the top 1 percent of income earners, with relatively small changes occurring below the top percentile."
