CIS is a stupid fucking term made up to be different. Just use biological. It's the same shit.

Not all the time (eg. complete androgen insensitivity syndrome XY women would be considered cis but not necessarily "biological" females), and it's just a shorter, intuitive word. It can also be useful to distinguish from pre-operative/pre-transition trans people.

but it could be argued that that's making too many distinctions. should we have a different word for every trimester of pregnancy? or every week of recovery from a broken bone?

We do distinguish the trimesters in pregnancy. By calling them "first, second and third"?

And don't forget the real tragedy, the use of the word "heterosexual." Stop inventing things, us normals hate labels. /s

But, at the same time, I do not refer to myself as a non-vegetarian, or gluten-tolerant, or non-intersex, or non-heterochromia, or non-conjoined twin... so outside of science/academia, one just might say that the onus is on the person coming from the demographic that account for somewhere between 0.03 and 0.3% of society to label themselves because the opposite can typically be safely assumed.

No. Cis- is the opposite of trans-, etymologically. The term was used long before it used to refer to people whose gender matches their sex.

Says who? You?

Doesn't matter because in this instance we are talking about gender. I don't care about the other ways it's used as they are not important to this discussion.

It means on the same side or "with". Trans means on the opposite side. It's not that fucking difficult.

apparently its a term used often in conjunction with organisms and cells and such. cis is a term most apt in /science. i learnt this when i popped at the first mention of cis by some tranny many months ago when i joined reddit.

Every term is made up for some reason. Being cissexual is a thing whether or not you like it.

It's a chemistry term for chirality, and positional affix in Latin.

It's not made up, although one could argue its use in relation to gender is rather contrived.

Wikipedia is not allowed to be used as a source in almost any educational institution. I could go edit that shit right now and take it out and then what? It's no longer a definition.

It isn't stupid at all! It's a rhetorically sound choice. If your goal is to make being transgender socially acceptable, than it is totally reasonable to coin symmetrical terms for people who are transgender and people who aren't.

  • [-]
  • kudosxv
  • 12 Points

Yeah. They already have a word for that. Biological and non-biological.

  • [-]
  • schwall
  • -16 Points
  • 17:26:55, 3 November

That isn't a sound rhetorical decision. Imagine you are trying to convince someone that there is nothing wrong with being transgender. Do you want to emphasize the fact that there are two equally valid ways of viewing your gender assigned at birth (transgender and cisgender), or do you want to present being transgender as a deviation (non-biological)?

  • [-]
  • kudosxv
  • 12 Points
  • 17:39:53, 3 November

It IS a biological deviation though.

  • [-]

Well, maybe, but my point is that regardless of whether it is or it isn't, transgender activists are acting perfectly rationally when they use the term cisgender. They aren't trying to make a special snowflake classification.

For a group (lgbt) that wants such equality they sure do label themselves a lot.

Members of the LGBT community do not act with unanimity. You will find people against many labels, or any labels at all, as well as those who think that having a name for how you feel is valuable.

Also, it isn't just LGBT people doing the labeling. "Homosexuality" used to be a medical diagnosis, and even now there are people that try to describe being transgender as a paraphilia. Members of the LGBT community have been labeled as deviants, perverts, pedophiles, libertines, sodomites, faggots, fairies, and queers. That's quite a bit of terminology.

Finally, you have not at all made it clear what equality and labeling have to do with each other, or how your biological/non-biological terminology is somehow less of a label.

he's right, if you're looking to socially engineer the population, you need to control their thoughts. best way to do that is with a steady dose of propaganda and language control

What? Everyone uses rhetoric. People against abortion call themselves "pro-life", not "anti-choice". Fiscal conservatives call themselves fiscal conservatives, not "safety net haters". You can think there is a Grand Queer Conspiracy if you want, but transgender people are one of the most hated minorities on the planet. It's like complaining people below the poverty line are orchestrating a New World Order.
