That's why I don't do it. No matter what you do, you're wrong. So, I prefer to be the type of wrong that allows me to keep my money.

The kind of wrong where you disregard other people?

I don't live in America, so I only have to tip when I go over there to visit relatives. It just doesn't seem worth the effort. I will tip if the service is very good though in a restaurant (which I believe is what tipping is for - rewarding good service)

It's not. It's the server's income.

Then why is it optional? Tipping by definition is a reward for good service. If the server is employed by the restaurant, I pay my obligatory bill to the restaurant - I don't need to pay 2 separate bills.

It's custom. The server is paid much, much less than minimum wage by the restaurant. You, the customer, are responsible for paying the server's wages. It's just the way the custom works. The server needs to get paid even for ordinary service.

It's optional not to tip. But it's also optional to pick your nose during a job interview or shout obscenities at passersby. By custom we don't do those things, because it's inconsiderate to others.

e: for reference, minimum wage is $7.25/hr, which is shit. A bartender is paid only $2.15/hr by the restaurant, which is beyond shit. You need to tip.

No, I most certainly am not. An employer pays the wages of his/her employees. Tips should be seen as a bonus - otherwise it puts unfair pressure on customers.

>The server needs to get paid even for ordinary service.

Tipping for "ordinary" service defeats the purpose of tipping.

>No, I most certainly am not. An employer pays the wages of his/her employees. Tips should be seen as a bonus - otherwise it puts unfair pressure on customers.

This is not actually true. The business pays the employee $2.15/hr, which is 4x less than minimum wage. Tips are not a bonus, they are basically the server's only source of income. The server needs to get paid, even for ordinary service.

By custom, the customer pays the server's wages. You might think this is a dumb custom, but it's the custom. It's not a "bonus", it's just pay. You might think it's unfair, but it's even less fair for the server to go without pay.

I think it's unfair that I should have to shoulder the shortfall in an employee's wages - that leads to entitlement amongst (some, not all) servers and results in employers cutting the wages of their employees as low as they can. I shouldn't have to feel guilty about not giving away my money on top of something I already paid for.

Well, the servers should be entitled to being paid for their services. And employers almost universally cut the wages to the legal minimum of $2.15/hr. If tipping were removed, then you would simply pay more for drinks and food. You pay either way, and this is the custom. You don't have to like the custom, but disobeying the custom really fucks over the servers.

If you don't know the custom, then that's one thing. But if you know the custom, you understand that it's not a bonus, and you understand that the server is relying on the tips as their source of income, then you really need to tip.

Dude just don't be a dick. When people visit whatever country you are from they follow your customs and such, do the same whenever you visit a foreign country.

Because it's how the restaurant is able to afford to employ many servers and ensure good service - it forces the server to directly work for the money they make. It's why the friendliest people on Earth are American servers. If they aren't, they're taking money from themselves. The restaurants and bars also love not having to pay for their employees.

There are only a handful of states that pay servers less than minimum wage. Fast food workers work way harder than any bartender and get no tips at all.

In my state it is $2.15, I can't really talk about others.
