Going through the comments in this thread, you'd think "reddit" was an autonomous and unified belief system. Heads up: the world is peppered with racists. They are everywhere. Reddit is a particular crosssection of the population. Racists are on reddit. They are at your workplace. Their kids go to the schools. They vote. They pay taxes. Telling someone they are racist over a mostly anonymous isn't going to teach them to be tolerant.
This isn't even entertaining. It's idiots being idiots and disagreeing with each other, but acting like what they have to say is going to change the minds of the opposition. Then again, par for the coast in another installment of David-Me: Social Justice DramAgenda
Oh get fucking real. Anything that shows the very hate filled under belly of Reddit is now labelled social justice? For fucks sake.
> Going through the comments in this thread, you'd think "reddit" was an autonomous and unified belief system.
it votes on what content it likes. it likes racism.
No. A vast majority of david-me's posts concern racism or sexism. True story. But you can say it's "Reddit" that is hate filled instead of looking around you and realizing that it's society that it hate filled, seeing as, you know, racists are everywhere.
You must really identify as a redditor to feel this perturbed by the suggestion that reddit is racist.
No, I'm just not so short-sighted that I think reddit is the problem, whereas these are the opinions and perceptions of people operating in society.
So what? It's not that interesting a statement to say that racists also exist outside of reddit. Should racism here be ignored just because it also exists outside of here?
Did you understand the initial comment? I think it's asinine for comments in this thread to treat the racism on reddit like it's a problem exclusive to reddit, or like reddit is some kind of cult with a unified opinion on things when it clearly isn't.
Of course racism isn't unique to reddit. What's unique is that it often gets highly upvoted on default subs.
Probably because the real world doesn't have those things
Which means what? That a lot of people on reddit, and therefore in society, agree with racist bullshit ideologies, but because reddit is semi-anonymous, people can express these sentiments without fear of any real public persecution.
> I'm just not so short-sighted that I think reddit is the problem
neither is anyone else, you're getting upset at a guy you made up
Nope. From the perspective of a black bloke, I can say it is both. I never see any blatantly hate filled shit against whites on Reddit. You have to go looking for it in SRS or Tumblr or some shit. But the other way round, it is everywhere. So yeah, Reddit is hate filled. So is society.
A good example would be the thread from yesterday posted in /r/videos of two white Scottish guys attacking a black guy. There were very little if any attacks on white people as a race.
Yup. The thread was filled with "not all of us are like this" or some shit. But if its a black person you get...
"please don't be black, please don't be black please dont be black- fuck" OR "I would never have guessed they were black" which pisses me off.
I have this theory that the main demographic of this site lacks empathy or atleast perspective. That they assume that everyone is the same as them and that if someone is something different than them or likes something they don't like that person is obviously wrong or somehow invalid. Different race? they're in the wrong. Different educatoin? they're in the wrong. Different culture/upbringing? they're in the wrong. different choice in videogames/music/whatever? they're in the wrong. There's too much passion and not enough thinking on this site.
What's scary is that most acquaintances we have hide some odd opinions, be them harmless, or bigoted, or moronic. Once the "reddit is racist" flag is flown though, I get the feeling that people forget that these are members of society given a semi-anonymous forum to air these moronic ideas, and that these problems don't end once the computer is shut down.
holy shit it's almost like a forum might reflect the larger society
I hate people as dense as you seem to be right now.
My initial post says exactly what you "quip" here, that reddit reflects the larger society, and then I go even further to say that we should not be discussing this as a "reddit" problem, seeing as ridiculing people on reddit isn't going to make the people behind the comments any more tolerant.
Elsewhere you say this:
>neither is anyone else, you're getting upset at a guy you made up
in response to:
>I'm just not so short-sighted that I think reddit is the problem
I'm not going to ask if you even know the context of my little quote there, because I know you don't, so here I go--if you read through this thread, and SRD threads like it, you will see people ridiculing redditors and "reddit" like it's some kind of autonomous cult. What does SRS stand for? Shit REDDIT says, which implies that the issues with these bigoted comments are a reddit problem. My particular comment here is in response to someone saying that I must identify as a "redditor" for stating the above opinion, and again, no. I keep saying it's not a reddit problem because it isn't, it's a societal problem reflected by reddit. A "reddit problem" would be shitty memes.
But you can go around showing how bad your reading comprehension skills are and feel good about how tolerant you must be; feeling superior to others on the internet really does something to make the world, and by extension this website, a more tolerant place.
Again, the comments upvoted in this thread fall par for the course in another episode of Social Justice DramAgenda!
lol you haven't really earned the level of respect that's gonna make people want to read that
So because I haven't earned your respect, you will respond to something without reading? You're a prince, Ackley.
all i'm saying is i read something you wrote before, and that was a mistake
