Guy makes a comment about how his wife & children are the best things that ever happened to him, this greatly upsets another redditor: "Of course your kids are the best thing that happened you, the rest of your life certainly isn't worth much." (np.reddit.com)

Why does everyone think having children is such a good idea anyway. There's way too many people already !
Maybe because some people want kids?
Maybe wanting something doesnt automaticaly make it a good idea?
They could adopt, however.
There are millions of children in orphanages all around the world, yet people spend thousands of dollars sometimes so that they can have one.
:(
There is a huge difference between raising children of your own blood and raising children from somebody else.
Which is?
I'm going to take a wild guess and say "You dont' give birth to somone else's child." ... and that's about it.
Is it not obvious enough? One child IS an actual part of you, the other child is not.
That's so horribly selfish.
Selfish? Because I want to have children with my own genetics in them? You posed a question why people decide to have kids instead of adopting, I gave you an answer. Sorry if realty doesn't for your utopian views. I never said adoption is good or bad, if you made that assumption that is your own fault. I gave you an honest answer as to why people choose their own kids, and you got offended by it.
Yes, that's selfish. There are hundreds of thousands of orphans around the world.
Selfish in your opinion. Raising a child regardless if it is your own or not is one of the least selfish thing you can do. You are giving up your life as you know it to cater to another. Seems pretty selfish that you expect everyone to bend to your views. If they are not fulfilling your Utopian ideas of how the world should run they are somehow beneath you and in need of your judgement.
How about you figure out what is causing these children to be in the situation they are in and focus on that. Instead of blaming people for not fixing the aftermath.
By what objective measure?
World population is projected to grow from 6.1 billion in 2000 to 8.9 billion in 2050, increasing therefore by 47 per cent.
13 June 2013 – The current world population of 7.2 billion is projected to increase by 1 billion over the next 12 years and reach 9.6 billion by 2050, according to a United Nations report launched today, which points out that growth will be mainly in developing countries, with more than half in Africa.
Five Earths at American Standard
If all of the world’s 7 billion people consumed as much as an average American, it would take the resources of over five Earths to sustainably support all of them. On average, each American uses nearly 20 acres of biologically productive land and water (biocapacity) per year.
World Population 1800-2100
I'm not a proponent of eugenics, unlike some idiots may like to suggest.
Edit: You might want to explain why you're downvoting me, rather than just jump on the bandwagon "oh, he's at -x, he must be wrong".
North America and other white areas are okay though, it's the other places that should be butt fucking.
Then do your part and kill yourself... (sarcasm)
Seriously though, what do you expect us to do...? Eugenics is a horrible horrible thing. And for that matter who would we decide who reproduces and who doesn't?
I'm not a supporter of eugenics. Stop putting words into my mouth.
Seriously, how in fucking hell did you even assume that I was a proponent of eugenics?
You can adopt rather than procreate.
Then how do you propose to fix the problem?
People are breeding and not stopping.
And adoption, really? Ok, first off not everyone can adopt. It takes a lot of money and you have to be in a stable situation. It's also common for, say, gay couples to be denied adoption simply because theyr'e gay.
So no, it's not an option for everyone.
So again, how do you propose we deal with it?
>Then how do you propose to fix the problem?
Moving the goal posts, are we?
The question was "What objective measure shows that there are too many humans on this Earth"
I answered it with United Nations projections on the human population AND the fact that it would take five Earths to sustain 7 billion people living an American way of living.
> And adoption, really?
Yes, really.
> Ok, first off not everyone can adopt. It takes a lot of money
In Canada, adoption from the public costs from 0 to 3000$.
Unless you're adoption from private, no, it does not cost a lot of money.
>and you have to be in a stable situation.
Well isn't that a terrible thing. Children will have to be adopted by parents in a STABLE SITUATION! THE HORROR!
> It's also common for, say, gay couples to be denied adoption simply because theyr'e gay.
I'm gay. I know this.
Here's a map of where LGBT couples can adopt
You're also telling me to propose a solution. Here's one: allow gay couples to adopt!
Also, gay couples can't have children, so it's not like they're exactly a problem.
> So no, it's not an option for everyone.
Your logic is this:
Since not everybody can adopt, it shouldn't be part of a solution for the global population crisis.
Which is very faulty logic.
And you didn't answer my question.
At all.
So again, what do you propose we do about it? Adoption wont' fix the problem because people still have kids even though adoption exists.
And yep, ti's not part of the solution because not everyone can do it.
That's not logic, that's just a fact.
Edit: to remove some asshole from the post.
> And you didn't answer my question. At all
Because your question was moving the goal posts.
I already answered the other guy. I don't care about your question because it's irrelevant. The point is: there are too many people on this Earth and it's unsustainable.
Do you disagree with that?
Nope, because we're sustaining.
I agree that there may be in the future, but at this moment we're actually growing in population.
Of course if you can't even answer 'What are we supposed to do about it?" I really feel no desire to give any sort of credence or respect to your opinion.
"Changing the goalposts" is a childish copout to avoid admitting that there's no easy answers.
The majority of the worlds population growth is in Africa. Countries like Europe have stabilized in terms of population and by the way it looks now America is heading in the same direction. Less developed countries where people lack access to proper contraception is where population growth is at large.
What does this change of the fact that there are too many people on this Earth?
The point I was trying to make was that as long as the majority of the population continues to have around 2 kids we should be fine. Stopping population growth would involve getting better contraception and development going in these less developed countries rather than people in developed nations choosing to have less kids. Look up the demographic transition to get a better idea of the point Im trying to get across. The way Im saying it is rather crude.
Don't quote me on this, but I think that population growth isn't a big problem in 1st world countries because the population is just replacing itself every generation and some countries, like Japan, are actually shrinking in terms of population size
Is this conversation really happening on /r/subredditdrama? What about 'to each there own'? Population growth isn't even an issue in Western nations right now.
HOrmonal and biological directive to breed.
