Lots more r/neopets mod drama, now with more fake death threats (self.SubredditDrama)

SubredditDrama

63 ups - 0 downs = 63 votes

As some of you know, this went down yesterday. Brief recap: Head mod stepped down in a melodramatic fashion, demodded another mod for vague reasons, and then the ex-head mod got banned by the new head mod. /r/neopets users brought the drama here, and some old mod drama was re-hashed.

After those posts and the subsequent banning of several members from r/neopets, along with a class 9 butter leakage into SRD it's self, one of the mods who was involved (/u/industria) claimed she was being sent death threats. (Snapshot)

She then deleted her reddit account, but (according to several sources, though I have no direct proof at the moment) continued to speak out on the Neopets Skype chat which /u/industria "owns" and is the admin of. She was also still going to be running one of the sub's holiday events according to the death threat post linked earlier. An outpouring of support was issued from the users of /r/neopets, because no one deserves death threats.

Several users took it upon themselves to report this abuse to the reddit admins. The admin responded that there was no evidence of any harassment against /u/industria

Another user created a post (Snapshot) about the admin's reply, which was immediately removed. It was most likely removed by automod, but the mod in question also commented in the thread stating she was creating her own post on the matter. No such post has yet been made, and the comment has since been deleted.

~~In addition to all of this, the holiday event I spoke of is a Holiday Greeting Card exchange. Which means /u/industria has access to a large number of user's home addresses.~~ She no longer has access to the document in question.

Some more metadrama from the death threats thread, if you're interested.

UPDATE:

The mod has now posted an update to /r/neopets it's self about the situation

>It doesnt matter if (industria) received death threats or bulling-she felt threatened.

  • UPDATE #2: (12:14 EST) *

One user is upset because the drama should have been left to rest so that people could begin to heal.

I had a conversation with the OP where I explained my decision to not make a post. This decision involved diceroll, I and the advice of the reddit admin mentioned.

industria has long since up and left and posting would do nothing but stress our subreddit further.

>/u/industria has access to a large number of user's home addresses.

She doesn't, they are with KL who has taken over the event.

I feel like not informing the community leaves the back door open for her to come back as a member (no big deal) or a mod (a very big deal) if most members of the subreddit don't know this went down.

This sucks, I know, but covering it up sucks pretty bad, too.

I also feel like not saying anything about it in /r/neopets leaves members of the subreddit feeling like there is a very real possibility that they, too, will be harassed or sent death threats, which is also not okay in my opinion.

She will not be returning as a moderator.

We are stuck in this weird position where regardless of what decision we make it has incredibly negative consequences.

Dice and I just really want to move forward and eventually with the help of a new mod or two we won't have this kind of situation to deal with again. Even the Reddit Admin recommended that we don't publicly address. Heck we might be wrong, we might be right... all I know is that this is a painful experience for tons of people involved.

You know that I'm not on the Skype chat, but I know I've been the subject of some discussion there in the last two days.

The thought that the last thing the larger community of /r/neopets knows about this incident is that industria was hounded off reddit under threats and that industria in the Skype chat and inourstars in your post are saying were directly or indirectly my fault makes me VERY uncomfortable.

Maybe it doesn't have to be overly specific? I'm sorry, climeski. I'll try to make this the last thing I say about this.

I actually left the skype chat so I don't know what's going on in there, although people have clued me in on bits and pieces here and there. I felt like it made me too biased and that as a mod I should get out.

>in the Skype chat and inourstars in your post are saying were directly or indirectly my fault makes me VERY uncomfortable.

I'm really sorry about this entire situation. I don't know what to say and at this point my brain feels like mush. I've sent you a private message.

climeski. I'm sorry to ask you this. I'm sorry this shit is raining on your head, but:

Did this decision also involve any former moderators? Did industria have any hand in your handling of this situation at all, after she was no longer a mod and after an admin told multiple redditors that she not only received no death threats but also received no threats whatsoever?

Because if she did, if you or dice ran your decisions past her, one or both of you have explicitly chosen to side with someone who lied to and IS NOT PART OF the community you moderate.

She did

We did not run our decisions past her, although she did make her opinion known to me. While many people did come forward and offer their opinions, in the end it's just me and diceroll talking it back and forth.

Except you said she would still be handling the other holiday event, she just wouldn't be directly involved with answering questions. That means she has not "up and left" but that she is still around in some capacity. Which makes it easy for her to come back and become a mod, if she's still involved in events.

Covering this up was never going to help anything, and arguably makes it worse because the mods already have a history of lying and being shady.

This was yesterday, a lot has drastically changed since then whether it be for the better or for the worse.

I'm reading all the comments here and I understand all of the concern. I don't know if we made the right or wrong decision, this is the first time we've ever had to deal with a situation like this before. In the end we were forced to make a decision and have to deal with the consequences, which I understand.

how short a memory span must you have if yesterday is long ago for you??

I don't, I'm not trying to implying that 1 day is a very long time. It's just that a lot of things HAVE happened since yesterday.

Also, I find it kind of bullshit that you and the other mod were running all of the posts by /u/industria while trying to decide whether to post. I also dislike that you conveniently left that out of your post.

So you and Dice weren't going over the post about industria lying WITH industria herself? You weren't attempting to spare her feelings, despite her lying about fucking death threats?

As a person, sure I felt poorly about how industria would feel and it made me hurt. The same way I hurt when I found out how others were feeling as well. But as a mod, no. Neither of us were basing our decision on sparing feelings.

So you did not run any of the possible post about her lying and seek her opinion on it?

We showed her the message from the admins and wanted to hear what she had to say. I hope I am understanding your question correctly.

Have you ever considered the crazy notion that she might have felt so backed into a corner by all the angry messages and comments that did take place, that she felt like if she exaggerated the vitriol, it would not show "weakness"? It's clearly a self coping mechanism if so. Industria didn't seem mentally sound, even if she doesn't have an illness, and honestly deleting her account was the best thing she did for herself. Now death threats? Ehhhh, that just stirred up the drama pot, but to her, it might have felt like a trade off to abandon all shame and make herself feel better. Believe me, she doesn't need random strangers tearing her to pieces already, she needs to talk to someone in real life that can help her.

I'm not that upset :P Mostly it's just hilarious that the lying and shady-ness still continues
