Richard thinks that his behaviour is acceptable, others disagree

I don't know why the word "unprofessional" is thrown around so much in mod drama. Moderating is not a profession. I don't think it's possible for moderators to act professionally for that reason.
EDIT: that guy below with the number-heavy username is a troll, here's what he pm'd me: http://i.imgur.com/TQlxBTp.png
Perhaps you should discuss this with /u/nix0n, who agreed that it is "HIGHLY unprofessional" (as he put it in the PM).
If mods aren't professionals, should they be held to any standard at all? None? It's an interesting question, and perhaps one the admins should consider.
I'm fine with whatever standards come with untrained, unpaid, unvetted, unnamed and unorganized volunteers on an entertainment website. I think the things you should expect are: do they speak the main language of their subreddit? Do they know what reddit is? Other than that, can't think of any fair standards.
> unpaid
While subreddit mods are not paid directly by Reddit (not yet, at least), they can and do get paid for promoting certain content on their subreddits (for instance--Subway on /r/funny). This activity is increasing.
Miles Cheong was one such person: http://www.dailydot.com/news/should-reddit-mods-get-paid/
> This activity is increasing.
It's on you to back up claims that you make. Otherwise, I can assume that you're full of shit. Care to explain the "Subway on /r/funny" comment?
Don't you know that everyone but him is paid to promote shit on reddit? We're all just shills.
Check your schedule, mate. The whole "shilling for shills" is on Shill Saturday. Today we're all about delicious and healthy Purina cat food until mid afternoon, where we switch to SRS shilling.
Can confirm. Am shill for the liberal elite.
Heil Satan!
I love those tickets that KLM provides me for free as travel mod. KLM, the reliable airline.
It's crazy that you're sponsored by an airline too! I get my tickets free from WestJet. WestJet, Owners Care^^tm
You get airline tickets? I just get butter. Endless sticks of butter. Gently melting in my living room.
Only tickets? Ha. You must be new at the mod game.
Well, they're first class of course. I'm considering switching to AirCanada^tm if they offer me something better though.
They were late with their payments so we actually remove all mention of AirCanada. We call it spam now.
Fair enough, you would know best, being a mod of /r/travel and all. I'll stay away from them.

It's true. I get piles of money from Dominos to moderate /r/sexypizza
I'm not sure why downvotes and mocking are appropriate; am I being rude or unreasonable in this conversation? If so, I apologize for offending the denizens of this subreddit. I'll cease bothering you now.
Probably because you're implying that mods getting paid to promote certain things on their subreddits is much more common than it is (SolInvictus is the only case like that I can think of, although there have been other mods that were corrupt in different ways, like cinsere and the quickmeme guy).
It is extremely uncommon, but commoner than it was 2-3 years ago. I have first-hand experience with this, but of course I don't expect anyone here to believe that.
This guy sent me a pm claiming to have been involved in reddit's recent funding and that part of the valuation came from "marketing money going to the mods."
I messaged the admins, they confirmed he is full of shit. And all of the people involved with that funding were listed on the reddit blog post.
Who was it? Do the admins know?
> Do the admins know?
Yes, the admins know. It was factored into the recent valuation.
I guess you can't back up your statements?
Sigh--yes, I can; that article demonstrates that mods are being paid. Will you recognize that first so that I know you're communicating in good faith?
That article talks about one ex-mod that was paid. I know about two or three other instances of this. Am I saying that mods haven't been found to be corrupt?
You said that this problem is increasing, so back that statement up. Also, please explain what you meant by mentioning Subway.
Again: it is up to you to back up your own statements.
The problem is--I have no link or online proof to back up these statements; I have personal experience in this matter.
But I doubt you or anyone here would believe me, so I suppose we'll just have to agree to disagree and end the conversation here.
Ah, so then you are full of shit. See, usually when something is real there would be proof. You're going around with a months-old Daily Dot (of all the sources) article as "proof," which only goes further in showing how unreliable you are. Thanks for the baseless claims and never answering my questions, goodbye.
This guy just pm'd me. He claims to have been "part of reddit's recent funding."

He's a fucking troll, sending a message to the admins about it now.
I don't really understand why you are so angry about this.
I don't really understand how someone with such experience with behind-the-scenes can have absolutely no proof or examples to provide.
I already provided information in the public domain, and you dismissed it. You'd dismiss any information I provided, which is why I said we should just agree to disagree.
Have a good evening. :)
You talking about that months-old Daily Dot article, which I already addressed AND said was missing other examples of corrupt mods?
Why don't you at least prove that you were involved in reddit's funding round?
Hey, just got confirmation from the admins that you are, and I quote them, "lying out of your ass"
All of the people involved in the recent funding were listed on that reddit blog post, prove to me that you are one of them.

You keep harping on about this PM you supposedly got that backs up your point. I think you should know that nobody actually gives a shit.
In case someone does, here are the PMs in full.
see, you say "in full" but you leave out the two previous sets of messages and the removed post you reposted to "see what happens". maybe your idea of "in full" differs from mine.
But, once again, nobody does.
👌
It WAS highly unprofessional, and I did say that. I acknowledged and addressed that specifically. The moderators are, in my eyes, held to a very high standard - and 99.9% of the time, act professionally and courteously.
When I addressed it, /u/-richard- acknowledged, and we moved on. When it comes to TIL - the mods in place, do the greatest job, considering the amount that gets submitted on a daily basis.
With cases like these, we all get together and really dive down into the nitty-gritty of the submission to see any err in our ways. It can take anywhere from an hour to a couple days to discuss whether we were wrong or right. In this case, with this specific post in question, we stood by the original decision to remove it.
Not because it's against our ideologies - but because it goes against the rules of the subreddit.
Thank you for your response--I appreciate it. If I could bother you with one question:
> With cases like these, we all get together and really dive down into the nitty-gritty of the submission to see any err in our ways.
Can you give me an example of one time in which you acknowledged and corrected an error on your part? I don't know much about your sub but it'd be interesting to know of this story.
For all of our moderators, we have our mod subreddit - /r/TILMods. This is a place where anything and everything gets discussed as a group. In some cases, we might even hop on IRC to talk about it. The mods are from all over the world, in order to provide the best coverage at all hours.
Some examples:
-- Are we still enforcing the "No trivial facts" rule or have we abandoned it? If it is the latter, shouldn't we remove it from the sidebar?
-- [user] messaged me. And, in the spirit of transparency, here's what he said and what I responded with.
-- Proposals for a more precise definition of "recent politics"?
And so on, and so forth. These posts happen on a daily basis, and TIL is constantly evolving. Minor changes are being made here and there, and when issues such as these are brought up - we take everyones comment into consideration as to how we should avoid, or embrace, future posts of this nature.
